“Wedding Day” is a personal short film made from archival footage of family weddings, including my own. The lyrics of the Thai song วันวิวาห์ ("Wedding Day") contrast with the images that show how rituals have changed over generations. The celebrations in the footage are full of joy but also tied to gender roles, obligation and material gain. My own wedding was smaller, with few family members present. We have gained freedom and individuality but lost community and tradition along the way. Despite moving to the UK over twenty years ago and being married to an Englishman, I often still feel like I’m still just passing through. This film is my way of connecting our two families, honouring where I come from, and shaping a path of our own.
